Variety confirms Dune remake

Variety has confirmed the Dune remake with Peter Berg at the helm. More details are emerging about who will serve as producers. This was reported back in December but now it looks like its becoming more of a done deal. Expect a 2010 release.

woohoo! i finish the book and i get a movie!
i have a habit of that

i read the Star Wars novels for the first time before the remakes came out in 1997
i read Fellowship of the Ring right before its release in 2001(actually was sitting in the theater trying to finish the book before the film started…it started with 15 pages to go)
and now I finished Dune, well, with 2 years to go

    Dude,

They should totally get Vincent Chase to play Duke Atreides or some other role. I love that guy…

Seriously though that will be really cool if they do it right. I just hope they don’t totally destroy the story like with Lord of the Rings or Star Wars parts 1-3.

Vinny for the Duke? Too young! lol. though he did play Pablo Escobar.

A Dune film is so easy to screw up because its such a huge story that uses many fundamental conventions that don’t play well to the screen. Internal thoughts or monologues? Metaphysical drug-induced explorations of consciousness and the future?

The script is everything. They are noting that the ecological themes are relevant. It’s such a relevant story.
    1) precious rare resource causing conflict
    2) ecological hardships and man’s attempt to conquer nature
    3) religious fervor and fanaticism
    4) oppression of a people’s and their inevitable rebellion

problem is, how can you effectively bring all those themes together? i wouldn’t be surprise if they tried to somehow simplify it…cut it down to one or two manageable themes. but you certainly lose something by doing that.

also: GO TO THE DESERT. PLEASE.

ya…i don’t want CGI desert. If George Lucas could go back to the desert to film Episode 1, then they should do it for this too.
